A message from Shan Oakes
Chair of the DEC (Hull) Management Group

The management group includes people drawn from teachers, educationalist, local authority advisors and representatives of the ethnic minority communities.  The group assists with deciding the priorities and direction of the DEC, recruitment of staff and generally helps where it can, particularly with strategic and financial planning and bids for funding.

I have now taken over as chair - a position I held previously from 1989.  At that stage we brought together RIDE (Resources In Development Education) and DEC.  A lot of water has flowed under the bridge since then!  Bill Rigby was chair from 1991 until we went to Uganda (2001). He got the centre moved to the Education Centre
via a few years at David Lister School).

Sylvia Usher has undertaken the role of secretary since 2001.  She has raised the profile of the Centre by providing a wider range of services which the schools took on with relish.  She has secured an enhanced reputation for the Centre and its role, not only in the Humber area, but also in the wider Yorkshire region, as
chair of the Yorkshire and Humber Global School Association.  DEC (Hull) and the voluntary sector is privileged
to be associated with this award.

I feel that the education world is at last realising that ‘education for sustainability’ (what has been known as development education/environmental education) should now be at the core of what goes on in schools.  The recently published ‘Sustainable Schools for Pupils, Communities and the Environment’ articulates this clearly
and with conviction.  It brings the strands of development, environment, local and global together with an
emphasis on community and young people’s participation, and emphasises the critical role for schools in this process.

We are now two years into the UN Decade for Education for Sustainable Development and the DEC is raring
to go to help bring about necessary changes in the wider Humber region!  We would particularly welcome new members of the management group to help us at this exciting time and we look forward to working in
partnership with you – please do keep in touch.
