About the DEC(Hull)About UsThe eight key concepts for understanding and living responsibly in a global society (as set out in Developing a Global Dimension in the School Curriculum, DfES 2005) are fundamental to the work of the DEC (Hull): Global citizenship Conflict resolution Social justice Values and perceptions Sustainable development Interdependence Human rights Diversity HistoryA message from Shan Oakes The management group includes people drawn from teachers, educationalist, local authority advisors and representatives of the ethnic minority communities. The group assists with deciding the priorities and direction of the DEC, recruitment of staff and generally helps where it can, particularly with strategic and financial planning and bids for funding. I have now taken over as chair - a position I held previously from 1989. At that stage we brought together RIDE (Resources In Development Education) and DEC. A lot of water has flowed under the bridge since then! Bill Rigby was chair from 1991 until we went to Uganda (2001). He got the centre moved to the Education Centre Sylvia Usher has undertaken the role of secretary since 2001. She has raised the profile of the Centre by providing a wider range of services which the schools took on with relish. She has secured an enhanced reputation for the Centre and its role, not only in the Humber area, but also in the wider Yorkshire region, as I feel that the education world is at last realising that ‘education for sustainability’ (what has been known as development education/environmental education) should now be at the core of what goes on in schools. The recently published ‘Sustainable Schools for Pupils, Communities and the Environment’ articulates this clearly We are now two years into the UN Decade for Education for Sustainable Development and the DEC is raring MembershipAs a member you will gain access to our wide range of resources and artefacts, be entitled to one free loan per annum, obtain discounts on some DEC events and be advised of any free events and receive discount off publishers’ prices on publications obtained through our trading arm, Global Learning Services. You will be entitled to vote at the DEC’s AGM and will automatically become a member of the YHGSA (Yorkshire and Humber Global Schools Association). |
