Museums Alive!

Slavery - Past and Present

This project, in association with Museums Libraries and Archives and YHGSA, is now completed.  Becky Lindgren, Global Dimension Co-ordinator and teacher at Southcoates Primary School devised and then delivered a scheme of work appropriate for Key Stage 2, entitled ‘Slavery-Past and Present’.  The lessons focus on abolitionists, including Hull’s own William Wilberforce and his campaign against the slave trade.  The lessons also make the link with modern day slavery in different parts of the world.  The aim of the project was to come up with a resource that can be taken and used by teachers in other schools.  In the coming months the scheme of work will be available on the Yorkshire Grid for Learning and MLA websites.  Schools in and around Hull have the added benefit of being close to the newly opened Wilberforce House, so can take advantage of enthusing the children with an out of school visit.

We are now entering the second phase of the Museums Alive project, and will be working with Grimsby’s Fishing Heritage Museum and an extended school in North East Lincolnshire.
